Invited competition 1st prizeOostenburg is a transformed urban district in Amsterdam East, with approximately 1,800 new homes along the waterfront, interwoven with the area’s rich industrial past. In 2023, Studio Maks won the competition organised by Stadgenoot for the district’s final building plot: the gateway to the new Oostenburg.

The building comprises 42 social housing units, combining compact apartments with a wide range of communal spaces. Its load-bearing structure consists of a modular timber system. The apartments are arranged along the façades, with a flexible central zone on each floor for shared living rooms, workspaces and guest accommodation. These ‘joker rooms’ can also be incorporated into individual apartments, allowing the building to adapt to changing residential needs over time.

 The building is designed without a conventional rear façade. Softly reflective materials mirror the surroundings, while the undulating roofline offers a contemporary interpretation of the historic warehouse. Recessed loggias provide sheltered, quiet outdoor spaces while keeping the volume compact.

A central void connects the floors, bringing daylight and spatial continuity into the communal areas. Together, the modular timber structure, flexible floor plan and shared spaces create a residential building that encourages interaction while accommodating individual and evolving ways of living.
